In the late seventies Peter Riegel started out retailing dry goods such as wool, organic paper and candles. Today, 30 years later, he can call himself Europe’s largest dealer of organic wine. He offers more than 1,000 organically produced wines from 16 different countries. Riegel Bioweine supplies the natural food business, the German wine trade and gastronomy. The business is based on a good quality of wine and biological standards. Sustainability in this case is not only a fashionable word but has been lived since the existence of the company.   

This includes a pronounced social and ecological engagement that is lived at Peter Riegel Weinimport GmbH. Therefore fair traded wines from South Africa and Southern America belong to the stock since many years as well as ensuring minimum price and socially fair wages for employees overseas. Also ecologically the company contributes to conservation of resources through waste prevention in the whole product life cycle, green roof surfaces and an optimized building concept.

Also biodiversity is a big topic. In the vineyards in Güttingen (Bodensee) and Quernes (France) humus formation is forced by special sowings to strengthen the resistance of the vine and consistently abandonment of chemical, synthetic pesticides. On the company premises rare kinds of goats (‘Tauernscheckenziegen’) are bred that are threatened with extinction, this contributes to biodiversity.
