Geographical information
With a population of around 17,000, Mátészalka is a small town, located in the East of Hungary near the border with Romania and the Ukraine. Numerous international companies are represented at the town's industrial park. One of them is Carl Zeiss Vision Hungary Kft., a subsidiary of the Carl Zeiss Group.
The Carl Zeiss History in Hungary
The history of the present-day Carl Zeiss subsidiary goes right back to the 19th century, when Nándor Süss founded a precision mechanics factory in 1876. In 1930 Carl Zeiss Jena acquired a portion of the property and after some historical and economical changes, due to privatization Mátészalka became for quite significant town of the world of Carl Zeiss again in 1992.
Today, the site is a center for the production of glass eyeglass lenses. Currently, 21 Zeissians work in the commercial office in Budapest; 418 at the production facility in Mátészalka. The 20th anniversary of the site was celebrated in May of 2012.
Besides eyeglass lenses 149 Carl Zeiss Sports Optics employees work in Mátészalka, producing optical components for binoculars, spotting scopes and riflescopes.
Activity today
The key production portfolios are the mineral stock lens and the prescription lens production in a very large range. Besides eyeglass lens production, toolmaking has also been continually expanded in the company in recent years. Further to spare parts and mechanic tool production the FreeForm polishing tool is a definite highlight. Firstly, the employees in Mátészalka helped to develop and produced the tool for the injection molding of the tool's plastic mold. Then, they supported product development through the experiences gained during test production. Mátészalka also has something to offer beyond Carl Zeiss. Another Service activity is the European Distribution Center support through manpower and facility.
